Choosing a web designer for your UK small business
What to check before choosing a website partner: scope, ownership, local content and ongoing costs.
Start with the customer journey
Write down your main services, where you work and what you want a visitor to do. A plumber handling emergency calls needs a different enquiry journey from a salon taking appointments. Give each important service a clear page and put a useful contact option where customers need it.
Compare scope, not just the headline price
Ask how many pages are included, who supplies copy and images, what happens to your existing URLs and whether booking or enquiry integrations are included. Get setup fees, ongoing costs, currency and any applicable taxes confirmed in writing.
Keep ownership and access clear
Confirm who owns the domain, website content and advertising accounts. Ask what happens if you leave, how you receive a copy of your site and which third-party subscriptions you will need to maintain.
Make local details accurate
Use your real service area and contact information. UK content should reflect your customers and services, not a list of places you do not serve. Keep genuine project locations accurate even when the work was completed elsewhere.
